Two Years and Counting

We went in for David's two year check up late Friday night. Aunt Hayley went with us since Matt had plans to meet up with friends Friday after work (it has been a while since he had any guy time with his friends, so I figured he would appreciate the evening off of David duty) and Hayley, David and I already had a great dinner at PF Changs. Overall, he is in good health.  He weighs 28lbs, 6 oz (in the 55 percentile), is 35.5 inches in length (the 75th percentile) and his head is 19 1/8 inches in circumference (in the 45th percentile).

We had such a great weekend last week, including David's birthday party on Saturday. Brandin and his family stayed with us Saturday night after the fair trip and we all went to the arboretum for a picnic lunch on Sunday. The kids, although at first unhappy with the lack of a traditional playground, ended up having all kinds of fun rolling down the hill, playing ball, and looking at the pumpkins and water fountains at the arboretum.

For David's birthday, Granny D and Papa Bruce bought him a Leapfrog laptop (it is actually called a Leaptop--which is super cute) that he has become quite fond of playing with while trying to go potty. Although Mommy and Daddy have been lazy about working on the potty training lately, David has started wanting sit on the potty thanks to seeing the bigger kids do it at school. He is getting pretty good at making it in time to go poo in the potty, but he usually wants to sit on the potty after he has just gone pee. Both is pretty great for his age. We figure we will let him go at his own pace for another month or two. The school doesn't switch them to Montessori-style cloth diapers until January, so the plan is to have him potty trained by then (mainly because he has such sensitive skin that I worry about him in the cloth pants. The theory is that kids can't really learn from the disposable diapers because they have made them so comfortable and absorbent that you don't actually feel wet. I agree with this logic and have tried the cloth diapers at home, but I am not devoted enough to keep it up. They are so messy..).

On Saturday night, Matt and I went to the World Series Game.  Beside it being a terrible game (Rangers lost 16 to 7), it was a lot of fun and we had great seats. As most of you know, Matt is a huge baseball fan. I never thought I would like it that much (lets be honest, baseball is pretty boring to watch on TV), but I had so much fun when we went to the playoff game the week before last. Much better to watch in person rather than on TV...speaking on TV, I swear some version of the real housewives of something or [Insert name of reality show] sitting next to us at the game. It was four women, all dressed in completely game-inappropriate attire (think - leopard printed corset with super skinny pants that may have just been pantyhose pretending to be pants and stiletto heels) that spent the entire game talking about cheating on their husbands (at least one of which played in the NFL), helping the said cheater write text to the "other man" and pointing out celebrities at the game. Once we were losing by so many points, it was kind of an amusing conversation to listen in on.

On early Sunday morning, after the really bad storm and a late night getting home from the game, we took David to have a new set of pictures taken. We love our photographer that has taken his photos since birth and it was great to see her and get updates on her little one (she has a 4 month old little girl- Abby). After the photo session wrapped up, it was nice outside so we decided to head over to the zoo for a quick visit. For anyone with kids, the annual membership to the zoo, arboretum, museum and aquarium are the way to go. For a little over $100 a year, you get unlimited visits for an entire year plus discounts and special offers. We love it because we can go to these places and not worry about seeing everything during every visit. We just pop in and see one part of the zoo each time. Although we have been probably 20 times this year, we are still finding new things to check out. This time it was the gorilla exhibit. Somehow...we have never been to this area of zoo (probably because we are usually headed straight to the giraffe - where you can actually feed the giraffe by hand...always a favorite of both me and David). There is an underground bunker where you can watch the gorillas and the two teenage male gorillas were putting on a show. They were wrestling with each other and pounding on the glass. It was amazing (although David was a little scared the first time one of the gorillas hit the glass in front of him...but then again I jumped as well)!

You can't really see in the picture becase I didn't get to my camera in time, but the turtles were humping. And not just humping, it was full out turtle porn. There was grunting and panting-- two things that I did not know turtles could even do. Then the female (I am assuming based on the bottom position) tried to get away and the agressive panting male chased her. Quite the show!  Even more disturbing was the play by play annoucements given by a group of 10-year old boys standing next to us. They knew way too much on the topic. It makes me dread the parenting work we have in front of us!
